Their size is impressive. The colony of over two hundred started out when a couple of imported Canadian geese escaped from the courtyard of a school janitor, on an island of the lake Tegel. Other species have a similar story and many wear yellow bracelets and tags with clear numbers: Cumberland turtles, Chinese mitten crabs, Mandarine ducks.
Tiergarten is loose and lets things happen. Two concrete shelters with feeders built in the ’60s appear among the bushes and are only accessible from the water to support and increase the overall exoticism.
