24) Quiet Life

by Sandra Bartoli

David of Japan sings with luminous hair and elegant powdered face: “Boys, now the times are changing / The going could get rough / Are you contemplating moving out somewhere? / Boys, will you ever find the time? Here we are stranded / Somehow it seems the same / Beware, here comes the quiet life again”.

Paul Robien introduces in 1921 the concept of living in a nature reserve, intending to oppose the Taylorist trend to optimize the exploitation of land surface for an ever more productive world. In 1922, together with other scientists, Robien founds the first nature observation post, an anarchist enterprise on a swampy island close to Stettin. They live at first on a large houseboat to then build a wooden house on land. Robien takes upon himself the mission to reveal the magic of the marshes to a growing number of visitors. He also watches and documents birds together with his son and Eva Windhorn. They are probably still there.24_quiet_life_1926_paul_robien_insel2
