37) Hut

by Sandra Bartoli

There is a hut on the Pfaueninsel that is completely covered in oak-bark. The textured surface is clearly beyond camouflage. Grotto-like and hypernatural, it hurts to look at the structure as a whole, the eye is soon permanently staring at the trippy detail of the skin. Intense. The building contains a large salon full of light on the upper floor, a ladder made of twisted branches is the connection to the ground. Originally conceived for hunting game, the hut has a blind plinth-like base with small loopholes to set the rifles. But quickly the hunting is discarded for a seemingly more refined and aristocratic taste, that is the pleasure of owning and watching animals, in quiet. Part of the island by the early 1820s turns into a royal menagerie, with masses of exotic animals: kangaroos, lamas, primates, alligators, chameleons, buffalos, wolves, bears, eagles, lions, and naturally, peacocks. Most of the wildlife is free to wander the place like in a safari park. Three days a week the island is open to the public, and it is packed not only with animals, but also with visitors storming the place, until the plan for a zoo in Tiergarten starts to take shape.37_hut_pfaueninsel_sandra_bartoli
