51) Alpine

Alpine vegetation is thick, tapered to the ground, lenient. It doesn’t need much. The higher it grows the more elemental its geometry becomes. The phenomenal high desert of white and steep rocks is relentlessly colonized in fragments of green wads and furs.

The commander of the British Army in Berlin, general Bourne in spring 1951 proposes to build an English garden in Tiergarten, standing for the good British-German cooperation during the Berlin blockade. Many plants are sent from UK as a present for this purpose to the Tiergarten director Willy Alverdes, even a camellia and one Windsor oak from the Queen. For the opening the camellia is meaningfully planted close to a German larch tree at the presence of Ernst Reuter and British Foreign Secretary Anthony Eden. Willy Alverdes designs the English Garden east of Hansaviertel using the specificity of certain plants in order to acquire different landscape characters. Cut out from the rest and surrounded by fir trees there is a rock mound of considerable size, planted with Alpine plants.51_alpine_sandra_bartoli
