A ground floor and a parking space

by Clara Meister

Or wouldn’t they build like this to prevent the houses from being flooded during the rainy season we wondered. But as a matter of fact these houses sit on stilts, so that the Nagas can pass under them – protective snakes that are often depicted shielding the Enlightened One. When young students in the 60s came back from Europe they brought Le Corbusier and preserved some traditional beliefs. Their modern architecture, appearing like the future from the past, never had a ground floor. Vann Molyvann and other architects ensured the Nagas their space. They nowadays just have to share it with parked cars. Will the Nagas like it? Can these cars swim?
