A presence of absence

by Clara Meister

Sweet voice: “Un, deux, trois, quatre, cinq, six, sept, huit, neuf, dix…one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine, ten, lady, buy, lady, one dollar!”
A voice with an accent “No, thank you.”
Sweeter “One dollar, lady, postcard one dollar.”
Voice a little bit nervous “No, no.”
Tempting “Bracelets one dollar, only one dollar.”
Annoyed “No!”
Quite serious “What do you need- I have everything.”
Softer “I need nothing.”
Tongue in cheek “I sell you nothing, one dollar only!”

(It is told that Sartre once ordered a cup of coffee without milk in his favorite cafe. A few minutes later the waiter returned to inform him that they are unfortunately out of milk and asked, if the coffee could be without cream.)
