Banana Boat

by Lichten*berg

Around Anton-Saefkow-Platz they had a party yesterday. A municipal get-together, which had this 1960s Eastern atmosphere to it. Nevertheless two guys with sunglasses performed classic rock ‘n’ roll: “This was the big hit here in the Federal Republic in 1957,” one of the guys said standing in front of this huge white prefab Plattenbau. Here? Really? This was the GDR not the Bundesrepublik. Not even West-Berlin was the Bundesrepuplik; it had a special status under the four-power agreement. Willy Brandt was elected mayor of West-Berlin that year. In West-Germany Caterina Valente, Freddy Quinn and Vico Toriani were in the charts. And Harry Belafonte, with Banana Boat.
Unfortunately we didn’t find out what they listened to in the East. Maybe West-radio. Banana Boat.
While watching the grey haired audience clap along with the imperialist songs we discovered this beautiful clock quite in the centre of the square:

Later around 10pm they had fireworks in the park.

Tomorrow we will support you with images and information about what happened in between.
