Big City Lights

by Guel Riz

Looking for an apartment in Istanbul is a tricky thing. After having decided where to move to I am now contacting landlords and real estate agents and making appointments to visit the flats. It’s going to take a while for some reasons but every now and then I have the chance to visit an apartment with a 180 degrees view over the city, the Bosphorus to the Asian side. These views always take my breath, leave me speechless and sometimes I think that I should take the apartment even when the inside is not that appealing ( sometimes worth the thought). The view over the city with its vastness, its lights at night and serenity always gets me. It makes me happy to sit there and just look at the city. From there it’s peaceful and it looks like it can harm no one.

When I talk to friends or people I meet and they tell me their stories about the city the perspective changes. How to get, be or stay happy here is a challenging concept, more than it ever occurred to me in Berlin. Berlin is luxury all the way.

The wonderful movie of the early 90s ‘London kills me’ by Hanif Kureishi comes up my mind. Will further explore the concept of happiness in Istanbul.
