Our course in Method Acting turned more and more into a discussion on urban semantics. Here is an example for a strange semantic situation, which we worked on today. Our subject, the Method Acting, brought us to the questions: who is acting, what is present, and how does it relate. How can we answer this question being confronted with the appearance of self referential signs in the city. The big colour field painting “Grünfläche” is describing itself, and it is marking the children’s playground beside. Almost like the situation the day before with the Rosenthaler Platz. The city talks about itself. The appearance of the graffiti is a strong contrast to this, even it is self referential as well. Here, not the situation is generating an output, it is the author, who is marking his own appearance on the place. The missing link between those two static attitudes is the idea of the necessity of the recipient. In our course, we tried to find different ways to work on all three semantics layers, the generator, the author and the recipient. Sounds boring? For tomorrow, the instructor promised to bring us into real trouble.
