Recently I asked a drummer slash producer about the best jazz drummer there is, dead or alive. I can’t remember what he said but I still recall that most of the mentioned players were already gone. But still, some of them are alive: Take Chris Dave (used to be drummer of The Robert Glasper Experiment) from Houston, Texas. When I saw him three years ago at the Stadtmusik Festival in the courtyard of the art museum in Basel, Dave was one with his drum. He played Dilla like he would actually hit on a MPC drum machine with this slight deceleration on the kicks. But then he switched again to being a classic jazz drummer and so on back and forth. If one becomes one with his choosen instrument or medium in such a way, magical moments appear and leave you in awe.
It’s the same with Julian Sartorius (picture above), swiss born drummer and musician. I saw him for the first time together with Dimlite (my favourite swiss beat producer by far) at Exil in Zurich and then again at Livingroom.fm’s Stadtmusik Festival in 2012. He accompanied and perpetuated Dimitri Grimm and together they created their own idea of rhythm and sound.
Tonight, Sartorius is playing live at Ladybar, accompanied by Bund MBK (a collective of musicians from Basel & Berlin). Time for Jzm&Ass. The concert starts in 10 minutes, so hush hush you purple cush!
