Electronic nose

by Anissa Kempf

Not only fruit flies can discriminate between healthy and cancer cells, also dogs and bees can do so. And most importantly, they can be trained to tell us whether human breath contains volatiles of cancerous origin, by, e.g., ringing a bell or flying into a given box. But, obviously, for several reasons, dogs, bees and fruit flies don’t fit within the cancer diagnostic department of a hospital. And that’s why people started developing electronic noses to sniff out patient’s breaths. With some success but far from reaching the sensitivity of a dog, a bee or a fruit fly. Because of that, scientists are now thinking about developing transgenic flies that flash up in green, yellow, pink or in whatever color depending on the volatiles they sniff out. Freakin’ Funky.
