For Sale

by Amanda Prorok

I almost didn’t notice it. Right across from Mocca’s, on 140 Maiden Lane, is the Xanadu Gallery, or what was formerly known as the V.C  Morris Gift Shop. This building is a very special construction – it was entirely designed by Frank Lloyd Wright. Its facade is unique, covered with many small bricks in a sandy brown, giving way to a semi-circular entrance. At this point, you would probably have a hard time guessing it’s a Frank Lloyd Wright building (unless you saw his trademark approval, a tiny red signature stamped onto one of the bricks). However, when you enter the building, you will notice how it resembles the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum (also designed by Wright), with its winding ramp up to the second floor. The space is beautiful, with fitted interiors made of black walnut, and plenty of light. The store attendant is dressed formally, in a suit with a tightly tied necktie. He patiently elaborates on the origins of the ancient pieces of jewelry that are being exposed. And when I ask about the building, he tells me, with regret, that they will be leaving it soon, as the property is for sale. For 10 million dollars. For a spacious building that is located smack in the center of San Francisco, and is designed by Frank Lloyd Wright,  I’d say that this price is quite a give-away! (The handcrafted walnut interiors are included).
