Independence is a result of self-value I think. If you give less a damn on the judgment of others then you are either stoned or you care about what you do. Things don’t serve to compensate the “forever empty” (as Louis C.K. has named it wonderfully) inside you. And you stop running around like an entitled child but contribute something that might be actually valuable.
