“I Still See The X”

by Fabian Wolff

Below is what may be the most disturbing video on YouTube that nonetheless is completey PG. Well, almost. Anyway:

In 1987 during the broadcast of an episode of Doctor Who this guy hacked the signal and managed to be on the air for a full 2 minutes. (Earlier that same day he’d interrupted another channel for 30 seconds, just him and his Max Headroom mask and the spinning metal.)

It really is a perfect mystery. It seems to be some kind coded message – “my brother has the other one, but it’s dirty” sounds like spy lingo, or something R.M. Renfield would scream. I’ve always suspected that maybe another broadcast hack was supposed to happen at the same time but failed.

Then there’s the noise – the whimpering, the screams. It’s very clearly an act – like, nobody is tortured – but at the same time there is some genuine agony there. Then there’s the spanking thing in the second. The presense of the woman takes some of the edge off – it’s not just some lone nut – but also makes it even weirder. Like, what was she doing there?

Then there’s the mask. Whoever that guy was, he knew what he was doing to create this weird moment that just can’t be figured out. Or maybe it’s just a joke on how new media is shit. A Max Headroom mask? Can’t get any clearer than that. And yet…

(As for our own incident today: I suspect Theresia Enzensberger. Or maybe that’s too obvious.)
