Idea #33: Write a Karma List.

by Van-Bo Le-Mentzel

Money is very practical, because it gives you the freedom to transform it into happiness the way you want it – as long as the things that makes you happy are buyable. Such as a Porsche, the new iPhone or a day off at Artemis. But what about the happiness which has no price tag, like a nice talk or a good karma moment, true friendship, family bond, love, joy, health, hope and so on? I will show you today, how you can achieve happiness without using money. Write on a piece of paper the things that makes you happy and share it with people who are interested in you. I have structured my list in three parts:

I) Things I need (urgently)
like washmachine, a new apartment, tools, a job, books, Food, whatever

II) Skills
like learning lao or how to repair a bike

III) Favors
like transporting my stuff from A to B, helping me out repairing something or translating a text.

I call it Karma List and I have published mine on an etherpad on www.sync.in/karma-list
(it’s free). It’s a super tool especially before birthday or xmas events.

The thing what I like about the Karma List is, that makes something with you when you write it down. You will realize that you actually don’t need that much. And probably you will consider, that there are a lot of things that can be achieved easier without money. And as life changes, you list also changes all the time. You will see that a published karma list will provoke a lot of random contacts with random people.
So try this out, set up a karma list and go out helping out people you like, support the supporters, and when they want to give you money for your support and your work you have two possibilities to answer:
1. Thank you I will write you a bill.
2. Thank you but honestly: I don’t know what the value is of my time I gave to you measured in euros. So please just have a look at my karma list and possibly you can help me out one day.
And by the way: the best things in life aren’t things.
