Looking Across Vierwaldstätter See

by Georg Diez

What do you do when you sit up in the Swiss mountains eating ecologically correct beef served by the most hunble of Swiss? If you have come here on a boat across the Vierwaldstätter See with captains who look like all they want to do all day is do the right thing? If there is a gondola that takes you up to the Wissifluh and there is a phone at the entrance to the gondola and you are supposed to dial the 14 or, if nobody answers, the 21, and then you enter the gondola and they ring once and you ring twice and the gondola takes off and on the seat there is a book and a piece of paper and it says “Please take it up to the Wirtsleute”? If you have been promised rain and there is sun and there is a Rastafari father sitting on the terrace and he is playing a sort of steal drum that sounds a bit like a Zitter or a Hackbrett, just more stoned or spiritual or something? If you put your kids to bed and Bayern has played 1:1 against Leverkusen and there is a Spiegel from 2011 lying around under an old pile of Geo magazines the top of which has a cover story on Flucht und Vertreibung? And then you read again on your iphone the story from Lampedusa and you think, 250 people have died this time and 20000 people have died in the last few years trying to make it to Europe, for this? What do you make of this?
