LOVE OF TRUTH

by Marcus Steinweg

What distinguishes the love of truth from the belief in truth is that the subject of the love of truth (the philosophizing subject) does not presuppose truth as substantially given. Only in touching truth does truth constitute itself. Truth means nothing other than the untouchable, the beyond of the possible, its limit. To touch a truth means to step outside of what is knowable. It means to lose all belief in one’s identity, one’s socio-historical being, in oneself as a person, as a subject.
