Merkel

by Georg Diez

I did not go to the premiere of René Pollesch`s new play Glanz und Elend der Kurtisanen at the Berliner Volksbühne tonight, I did not go to see the Pet Shop Boys or Blur tonight, and I did not go to the opening at Judy Lybke`s gallery Eigen und Art. I will not watch the soccer game between Germany and Austria with the new 50 million Euro man Mesut Özil. I am listening to Scratch Massive, a music mix for the site Nowness that is streaming on SoundCloud and was given to me by Zoe Cassavetes via Facebook. What I did do today, before, at work, was meet with a crew of German television`s very own ZDF, one of the two public funded tv stations, to talk about the weaknesses of the German political system or scene, the abscence of any real conflict or discussion in the face of some of the most urgent problems ever faced by mankind or, for that matter, Germans. Is this lazyness or just obscene? What the tv reporter wanted to know why there are so many people who profess that they will not vote September 22. There is a difference, I tried to explain, between people who used to not vote say ten or 20 years ago and people who will not vote 2013 – the one was a protest, more passive, within the realm of the system, the other, today, is a statement of emancipation, a positive, progressive protest against a dysfunctional system, within and without: The way the Euro crisis has bent democratic rule towards a technocratic regime in Europe and the abscense of any real opposition to Angela Merkel. Damn, I wish I knew what René Pollesch would say about this. I should call him up one of these days.
