museum of loneliness

by Chris Petit

I don’t know if they still have them but Dusseldorf used to have the coolest traffic lights which told you what speed to keep to stay on green, or did I imagine this? One of the big problems in London is how long to wait for a bus. The number 11 was the worst: none came then three turned up at once. Now a lot of bus stops have electronic signs telling you how long, which has the opposite effect of making everyone more impatient. That said, the top floor of a bus is the best way to travel around London, if you aren’t in a hurry, and now they have made it impossible for cars, with the average speed for motorists now slower than in the days of before the internal combustion engine. MoL says get a horse. MoL has observed it is no longer possible to calculate how long any journey will take. Google Maps thinks it can predict but it is nearly always wrong because it fails to calculate for chance and human error. There is no longer such a thing as the perfect journey. Now it takes as long as it takes. MoL says: learn to love it. Life is a detour.
