Old urbanism has no soul

by Dominique Koch

In 1949, Le Corbusier stars “The Architect” in Nicole Védrès’ film “Life begins tomorrow”.

“The only way out of the disaster caused by the old manner of city planning is to destroy everything and to reconstruct it.” (Words spoken by “The Architect”.)
A film of adventure, love, humour and expectation. “It is the most complete film that has ever been attempted, in which many notable men of this century act their own part on the screen.” This is how the producers were talking about it. The New York Times wasn’t as convinced as this and wrote in the article about the first (and last) screening in New York the following conclusion: “Like most symposiums, this one generates more hot air than light.”
Le Corbusier won’t be remembered as a movie star.
Today, he would have celebrated his 126th birthday.
