on the radio

by Jeanne Tremsal

I drove through Berlin today. To the far East. Listening to the radio.
It was grey and it was raining.

I haven’t been listening to German radio for years. They played commercials, I don’t remember what for. It doesn’t make any difference. It’s about the jingles. They were indeed the same than 15 years ago. Did radio time just stop? It got even weirder with an ad for a musical:  Blues Brothers. Musicals definitely belong to another decade.  Their perpetual existence deeply disturbs me. Even more though: their incredible success.
Radio jingles, musicals, and the grey east, make me think of the 1990s.
Gainsbourg sings, Je t’aime moi non plus. I am driving down the Karl-Marx-Allee. The song just fits perfectly to the city, the avenue, the rain.
Berlin is a better match than Paris. It makes me happy.
I sing: L’amour physique n’a pas d’issue  and notice this line in the song for the first time.
