Origins

by David Knowles

It’s hard to start. That’s why I skipped yesterday and started on day two. So I’m late but I also began on a rest. And it’s the tunes that begin with a rest that really swing. Origins are a human obsession. We all want to know how something (animal, vegetable, mineral) or some situation (the universe, life, death) started because we think it will give some meaning to the way things are now.

I read an interview with Wallace Shawn yesterday (my rest day) in which he was asked why he writes so much about sex. His said it fascinated him because it is this thing that never really had a beginning. Nobody knows when or how sex really started. And no one, save perhaps the ridiculously puritanical, believe that it’s going to end. It’s been a human activity for as long as humans have been humans. And it still makes us a little nervous and a little thrilled.

Which makes it the perfect place to start. A beginning without a beginning.
