In the wake of Berlin Alexanderplatz (Petit’s introduction notes the possibility of Fassbinder turning 70 in 2013): “freely adapted to our times,” Franco left this year in what would have been Soledad Miranda’s 70th. She died on a Lisbon highway in 1970 at the age of 27.
Soledad translates as loneliness, and Miranda, in US Law: “denoting or relating to the duty of the police to inform a person taken into custody of their right to legal counsel and the right to remain silent under questioning.”
A tribute to Soledad was held by The Stanley Schtinter Picture Show at Roxie Theatre, San Francisco. In 2013, flyers from the event are exclusive to the Liberated Film Store, exchangeable for a suggested donation of 50p (for any quantity).
