smoker

by Jeanne Tremsal

In my yesterday’s post I mentioned this important soccer match, only shown on Pay-TV. So I had to leave the house to watch it. No way I would miss the match. All soccer bars are smokers bars. Like the one I went to. Everybody was smoking. Me too. Why are these two things related? Sports and smoke? It actually doesn’t fit––at least not anymore. In the 1990s there were still smoking professionals. Like Mario Basler, Klaus Augenthaler or Giovane Elber who were smoking at half-time.

In yesterday’s bar were only men.
At one point I was screaming –maybe a little too loud– “faster, faster”, which was commented straight away behind me: usually women would never scream “faster, faster.”
Big laugh in the men’s round. The usual jokes about woman not knowing what offside means followed. Even bigger laugh. Wow, that still exists. For a brief moment I felt the urge telling those fat smoking guys with no clue about the game, what offside means and share my vast knowledge on soccer. I didn’t. I looked up what the best translation for “Männerrunde” (men’s round) would be and the result was an evidence. Männerrunde = smoker [esp. Am.] [informal social gathering for men].
