Tegel Airport

by Jeanne Tremsal

I landed at Tegel Airport at 11pm. No way I could take the S-Bahn. Too late, too tired. So I took a taxi. I was looking at the different cars and drivers standing outside their vehicles. This time I wanted to make sure to have a nice car and a nice quiet driver. I’ve had some bad experience lately. I chose a Toyota Hybrid with a very friendly looking small and chubby guy. I made the wrong decision. The second I sat down he started to talk and he wouldn’t stop during the whole ride. First of course he asked me where I wanted to go, I said Kreuzberg. Kreuzberg, he was happy to hear that. In Kreuzberg is a Hühnerhaus (Chickenhouse, grilled chicken is the only thing they have) and he was very hungry and when he’s hungry he starts to get nervous and that’s not good. He asked me to accompany him, I declined but he insisted. After a while he understood, telling me that he is positive anyways. He saw his ex-wife on the internet today after not having seen her for 15 years and that made him very positive. I did not completely understand. Actually the only thing I understood was a word from time to time. He had a very strange and strong accent. Impossible to tell where he was from. He told me that it wasn’t his fault that they aren’t together anymore, he did nothing wrong, not a single mistake. He told me he was sick, something with hormones, but that he is taking pills and now he’s positive. He showed me the pills. He told me he wouldn’t work in the east because people were so aggressive there and drunk most of the time. The west is much better but Kreuzberg is difficult too. Too many drugs there and too many turks. I asked him where he was from, he said from Turkey.
