The half wisdom

by David Iselin

Today a friend asked if I have read The Divine Comedy by Dante Alighieri because I was telling her that I will pay for my sins with 10000 years in the Purgatorio before I go to hell. No, I have not. It’s not that I am completely unfamiliar with the content of the Commedia (I wouldn’t start a post with her if I wouldn’t know a little, would I?). But as it is the case with almost everything in life, you usually know just a tiny bit. I know a little about how planes fly, I can imagine how a bridge is built to last, I know almost nothing about Syria, I know a little how you code your own little algorithm. There are a few persons who have profound and deep knowledge, but I guess they are all either dead or crazy. So how can any discussion make any sense when everybody taking part just knows a little. There are two strategies out of this, either you pretend to know or you hope for associations, going from the thing you know a little to the next thing you know a little. Meandering is what we do.
