The School of Music (9)

by Igor Levit

Is it the greatest, the most incredible, most influential of all piano recordings ever made? Live … It is not a record. It is simply the greatest achievement for any pianist by any pianist. In my opinion. Sviatoslav Richter, the titan, the icon, the most magnificent of all pianists played and performed this piece like nobody before and nobody after. Listen to the ability of timing, to the sound but especially to his interpretation of the devastating slow movement in c sharp minor. One of the greatest of all music works, in this recording it becomes unforgettable and, yes, breathtaking. What is it that makes this interpretation so unique? It is quite simple I think: There is no interpretation. What you hear is simply what Schubert wrote. Richter translates notes into music. That is all. As simple as it can be, yet it is uncomparable. Sorry to say, but for me this is the greatest piano recording of all times. So for now we will not listen to any piano music anymore for some while. What can follow? Time stops.
