The stranger

by David Iselin

Being in Japan means being a stranger confronted by three questions: 1) Where are you from? 2) What are you doing here? 3) When are you leaving again? 1) Being from Switzerland means you have a very good image (chocolate, cheese fondue, Heidi). 2) Being here for a wedding means you cannot be a complete sociopath. 3) Going back soon means you are okay because you won’t stay forever. It’s not that you are not interesting as a foreigner in a kind of Georg Simmel way (der Fremde) as a mirror. However, you will hardly ever fit completely into the Japanese society, not because you cannot fit but because you might even try to fit too much.
