THE THREE LIVES OF CHRISTINA THE ASTONISHING (#23)

As Told by the Holy Woman in Her Own Words
A Hundred or So Years after the End of the World

All the interest he showed made me very happy. Martin was the first person to show real curiosity about my indestructible mortal body, and so far he had not shown any fear.
“I can see your burns are healed, Christina. But you also tell me you can fly through the air like a bird and perform other feats of wonder. If I’m to believe this, I’ll need to see these special powers with my own eyes.”
I set down the stack of logs I was carrying and rose up in the air until my head bumped against the ceiling.
Martin didn’t scream or run out of the room. His little eyes gleamed as he watched me. “Yes, very good, very good. What else can you do?”
I lowered myself to the floor as circumspectly as I could. I wanted to impress Martin but not scare him, and so far he had taken it well. “I can fly very high and very far,” I told him. “I can breathe underwater. Bullets can’t kill me. Neither can fire. Giver gave me this indestructible mortal body to show everyone that a world of Light and Love exists behind this world laid waste by the Great Miasma. In that other world your body will be indestructible, too.”
Strictly speaking, this wasn’t true; in that other world we have no bodies at all. But I desperately wanted Martin to listen to me.  Giver hadn’t been very specific about what I was to do, so what other way was there to prove the existence of the world of Light and Love?
