As Told by the Holy Woman in Her Own Words
A Hundred or So Years after the End of the World
Martin seemed to be thinking hard. “I know of a venue,” he said finally, “that would allow you to bring your message to many, many people in this city.”
I was very excited to hear this, and said so.
“Let me talk to my friend Travis tonight. If he’s interested, I’ll bring him over to see you.”
After Martin left that evening, I tossed and turned on the long wooden bread table I used as a bed, trying to think of the proper way to be telling people about my body and the world of Light and Love. So far, I felt, I hadn’t done a very good job. This time, when I’d finally had the chance to talk with the only person besides the Orthodox Giver ladies and my sisters who didn’t run away screaming, I’d exaggerated and ended up offering the indestructible mortal body like some kind of prize in a contest. Once again my need for attention had trumped my real reason for coming back.
Martin’s friend Travis arrived shortly after noon the next day. He was tall and skinny with long greasy black hair. He wore shiny pants with a lizard skin pattern. As Travis watched, Martin had me float in the air and lift the hot metal trays till my skin sizzled. For the clincher, I picked up Martin’s bread knife. Positioning myself over the sink to avoid staining the floor, I slit each my arms from wrist to elbow. Both men flinched a little but never took their eyes off me. My arms bled and bled and bled; they hurt so bad I almost fainted. But soon the bleeding stopped and the skin closed up over the wounds. Half an hour later, my arms were good as new. Martin and Travis exchanged glances, and Travis nodded.
“Christina,” Martin said to me, “How would you like the chance to demonstrate to large groups of people this incontrovertible proof of the world of Light and Love?”
I nodded eagerly but felt obliged to point out that with a few exceptions, my powers only seemed to frighten people.
“Not to worry, little lady,” Travis broke in. “I will tell everyone what to expect ahead of time. If they are forewarned, they will not be frightened. In fact, I think I can promise you they will positively look forward to it.”
“And thus will be better able,” Martin added, “to make the connection with the world of Light and Love.” Both men nodded solemnly, and my heart filled with joy.
