A Hundred or So Years after the End of the World
At this moment in linear mortal time, I understood, we were in the process of replacing our lost history with something else. Just as the bear had said, it was not important to know what had happened before; it was up to us to create a new reality. The new reality must be created out of a place of love, not fear. This was the message I was to deliver to the Duke, not in words, not as a lecture, but in the grace and righteousness of my own being.
With this thought I came out of my trance to find myself crouched inside the damp, blackened hollow at the top of the redwood tree—stiff, sore, and very, very hungry.
The next day I flew back to the castle.
