THE THREE LIVES OF CHRISTINA THE ASTONISHING (#54)

As Told by the Holy Woman in Her Own Words
A Hundred or So Years after the End of the World

Nothing had changed, nothing. I returned to the Lady House in a deep funk.
That evening over our bowls of vegetable broth Belinda tried to cheer me up. (She had adopted my frugal eating habits and to her delight had shed some of her excess flesh as a result.) “The Light will come back,” she reassured me. “I already feel something different about you.”
I closed my eyes. I’d discovered good things were more likely to happen if I just surrendered instead of directing all my will toward that often wavering spark within me. As soon as I did this, a wave of joy washed over me. Then it receded, but not all the way. The hint of something holy lingered. I opened my eyes. “It’s there,” I told her happily.
“You see?” Belinda always believed in me, no matter what.
