The white Swiss shepherd dog

by David Iselin

I went to Kunst Zürich, the foremost Zurich art fair (is it?), based in Oerlikon. First of all, if you want to eat dinner after 10 pm in Oerlikon go home, head to McDonald’s or le Muh (what a name) near the train station. The interior is a mix of Starbucks and Vapiano (which is okay if you like this kind of interior), but the food was fine. Just ignore the other people as they look like the Swiss alternative to Japanese salary men without their strange dignity. Some of them apparently have some serious issues, as you can guess from their use of the pepper caster, as a friend was guessing. Adding, not much to talk about the art fair. Too much sweetness, too many pictures of the Alps. Not enough roughness. Maybe too much Switzerland? Anyway, we were talking in le Muh about the Berger Blanc Suisse. If you don’t know what a Berger Blanc Suisse is, don’t worry, you are not alone. I never heard of it until tonight. Maybe it has to do with the fact that I am not the foremost dog lover (a fact you probably don’t care about too much). But anyway, the Berger Blanc Suisse or the white Swiss shepherd dog (or let’s just call him the white Schäfer for heaven’s sake), was actually a dog which you could label “entartet” as the Nazis considered white Schäfer as not being pure enough for their ideology of racist pureness. What makes the white Swiss shepherd dog kind of likeable even to a non dog lover like author no. 10 (which is me). Good night.

* And speaking about dogs you might know that cynic derives from the ancient Greek kynikos, meaning “dog-like”.
