Two coffees

by Anissa Kempf

Recently I went to have a coffee with a Magrebian friend of mine. And we spoke about many different things. One such thing was the adoption of a new constitution by the Tunisian parliament. Despite the fact that Islam is the official religion in Tunisia, the new constitution isn’t based at all on Islamic law, which is obviously a huge step. From now on, brothers and sisters shall inherit in equal parts! From now on, women and men shall be treated equally! From now on, every citizen shall be free to believe in whatever she or he believes in! “Bullshit”, she said, “and it took them three years to write down what was already written down 50 years ago. Occidental media have no clue. And they congratulate the parliament as if a miracle would have happened. Bullshit. Why should they congratulate a country that decides to treat (again) woman and men equally”? And then we ordered a second coffee.
