What a Blessing

by Brittani Sonnenberg

what a blessing

This morning I went to brunch in town with two fellow VCCA residents at What a Blessing. That’s right; the name of the bakery is What a Blessing, and if you walk in wondering what kind of blessing they’re talking about, there are bible verses pasted all over the walls to help you out.

All three of us ordered the brunch buffet; an unusual option for a bakery, but one I wasn’t going to argue with, as it involved muffins, doughnuts, coffee cake, and cinnamon rolls cut into fourths so you could try one of each. Plus scrambled eggs, bacon, biscuits, gravy, sweet potatoes, regular potatoes, and prodigious amounts of fruit cocktail.

As I returned to the buffet to heap my plate, I kept hearing snatches of conversation at a nearby table about childbearing. “The doctor told me to PUSH,” one woman was saying, surrounded by six other women, finishing up their biscuits and giving her the floor. “So I did. Half an hour later, the baby was out, and my hair still looked good.”
