I had the honour of meeting Lou Reed once very briefly backstage in Edinburgh at the invitation of my good friend drummer Fred Maher who was touring with him, Lou was as baffled to discover that someone who lived in Scotland might not play golf as I was to discover that this wild child was a golf obsessive. I was so clearly a disappointment to the great man that we didn’t hang around long. Lou Reed left an amazing body of work behind him, White Light White Heat being crucial to my own personal manifestos but the tune in my head right now is Coney Island Baby and his particularly legacy to me was the immortal brush off “stick a fork in their ass, turn em over they’re done” from his song Last Great American Whale which has turned around many a defeat for me although I never matched his off the cuff, world weary yet uncompromisingly tough delivery of the line..The song is one of those whose meaning is extensively discussed- today i have discovered that this line is itself channelled from Don Quixote. RIP Lou Reed.
